Cost-effective, safe and environmentally friendly, the format of bag in box packaging or BIB for wine, with a long tradition in other European countries, has now landed in the Spanish high-end market. It is a new type of container that brings the opportunity to expand consumption.
The technology behind the BiB Wine consists of a cardboard box containing a bag made of synthetic material that prevents oxidation of the wine. The bag contracts as it is consumed, not allowing air to come in, and enabling a longer life of the wine.
The consumer obtains a lot of benefits. Often, you do not open a bottle to drink a glass of wine if you are alone. With this new packaging format, you can pour a glass of wine and the rest will remain in perfect condition for the next few weeks.
The bag in box also allows for greater storage of wine at home, and its use is much more convenient.
Finally, removal of the glass reduces costs, affecting the final price of the product, between 25 and 30% lower.
For the manufacturer, in addition to the cost, BIB design facilitates its logistics, relative to other packaging alternatives. Also, this new type of packaging has lower environmental impact because it reduces waste and is easier to recycle.
BIB has also its place in restoration, particularly in the 'wine by the glass'. The cost is much lower, no waste or bottles without consuming, and the client always receives a wine in excellent condition.
While the Bag in Box is quite new in our market, the trend is clearly upward. According to some figures from the “Instituto Nacional de Vitivinicultura”(Spanish Wine Institute), while in 2011 1.200 liters were shipped, in 2014 almost 90,000 liters of wine were reached in Bag In Box packaging. At a country level these still are small numbers, but it also means that the potential for growth is enormous.
